Hey guys,

Bit of background info, I used to race 1/5th petrol and 1/10th nitro at Mendip a few years ago, I also used to race indoor 1/10th when the club was at the hall by Weston Football Club. This was back when Hot Rods was open in town, and everyone used to be in there hassling Dale to get the latest bits and pieces for their cars (or was that just my dad and I?)

Anyway, back then I wasn't old enough to be able to buy my own stuff, and now I am. I used to race 1/10th electric (and still have my old Yokomo YR-4 II Special!) but it seems now all the focus is on 1/18th scale. I've seen the FTX Blaze is quite a popular choice, is it worth me buying one and just coming down and starting racing, or is there something else I should be looking at?

Like I said I've got a bit of experience, and still have all my old radio gear and stuff, but these days all the motor terminology is confusing me, so I'm looking to get something I can buy, throw on the track, and drive!

Cheers,

Jon

You'll be getting a response from Si (Mrspeedy) pretty soon. Si runs WORM which is a 1/18 club in Hutton which is only a few miles from Weston's town centre.

I've been going for the last few months and it is bloody brilliant.

If i were you i would come along for one of the meetings and have a look and a chat about what car to get. I found it a bit of a mine field getting the right car but i got there in the end.

The Blaze converted with the wide ST suspension is what alot of people run. You can get the LRP Shark Factory Monster which already has the wide suspension on it and virtually every upgrade you will need with the exception of the odd little tweak. The anderson MB4 Truggy has the wide suspension. The Vendetta St has the wide suspension. These are all effectively the same car with the exception of the Factory LRP Shark Monster which has got loads of upgrades with probably the two most important ugrades being the steel driveshafts and ball diffs. It works out better value for money getting the factory Shark Monster over the others as you will only end up upgrading the others over time.

Motor and ESC I would expect the majority of people to recommend the Novak sensored brushless system. This is not my personal preference.

A good servo is the Ino Lab HG D261HB which normally comes highly recommended. I use this servo and find it a little gem.

I'm still fairly new to this myself so you should get a reply from some of the more experienced guy's on here.

I'm pretty sure it was WORM I used to race at when I was younger, except then it was indoor 1/10th and 1/12th on road we used to race, rather than the 1/18th scale stuff.

I've found a couple of cars on ebay,

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...8#ht_1879wt_962 has a reserve of £160 but looks to be almost everything I'd need.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...05#ht_500wt_977 seems okay at the moment for the price, and the seller also has a shark setup http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LRP-SHARK-LRP-BRUSHL...=item35a61a461f

Thanks for the ESC/motor/Servo recommendations, I'll definitely check them out.

Any comment on the above cars?

Hi Jon, good to see a former WORM member remembering his roots biggrin.gif

I also used to race at Weston football club with my son Dan until they burnt down our hut with all the carpet inside angry2.gif that was the beginning of the end for that part of the club ...

WORM at Hutton is the remains of that club, you might even recognize a few faces good.gif

As Lee says, the best thing you can do mate is to come along to a club night and see what we get up to and have a look over some of the cars that we race there. It will also be a lot easier to explain the car types, it can be a little confusing to new comers ...

The second car you have there is actually being sold by a guy at our club !! it is a Blaze which is the correct chassis type, but probably not the best version going, the brushless setup is good to start with tho. depends how much you looking to spend.

Our next club night is on the 12th, next tuesday, if you can make it come along for a chat good.gif

I don't know what sparked my interest again, my car has been sat by my bed on a shelf for the last god knows how long, then all of a sudden decided it might be fun to start again.

That's a real shame, living in Weston I know that you have to expect that kind of behaviour from people these days.

Cool I only live in Worle and my parents ride horses in Hutton so I'm very familiar with the area.

I would love to pop down next Tuesday but I'm going to a gig in Bristol (as long as it's not cancelled due to the bad weather), when's the next after that?

I noticed it was fairly local, that's cool then, are there usually decent priced second hand setups available or should I be prepared to spend some cash? I don't really have a budget in all honesty, I'm 22 working full time at a design agency and still living at home so money isn't a big worry, but I don't want to go mad!

You picked a good class to start up again, and WORM is good friendly club that don't take things too seriously but still like to race proper good.gif

Here's a link to our website if you haven't already seen it - http://worm-racing.co.uk

Don't be put off by some of the madder tracks in the videos, they're not all like that ! but fun is the key ...

Generally we race on the 2nd and 4th tuesday of each month but this month has been hijacked by the panto club so we're racing on the 12th and then 19th ....

I'll have a hunt around for a suitable setup for you, micros aren't too expensive to get a setup going and runnings costs are super cheap, but really if you spend out some cash on a good setup you don't regret it.

Si

I'd love to get back into 1/10th electric again one day, but for now I just want to have some fun and get back into it.

I checked out the website, looks good! (And my fulltime job is as a front end website designer/developer tongue.gif )

I'll definitely be along on the 19th, we'll see what happens regarding the 12th.

That would be great, I appreciate it. I have a habit of getting very serious very quickly so I could end up buying a cheap setup then ditching it straight away to buy a top of the line one... I'll blame my dad for that!

You'll be happy to know I jumped in at the deep end and bought Jamie Thomas' car, as seen here. Definitely see you all on the 19th smile.gif

Awesome buy to be honest Jon, you couldn't of really bought a better starter car smile.gif
Where do you work by the way? The WORM site is one I did when I was about 16 but I'm doing a degree in graphics which has had a lot of CSS in it! Good fun biggrin.gif

Would you guys appreciate me bringing my SLR along with me every now and then? I've also got a video camera which is a few years old but rarely gets used. Not every meet, but maybe once every now and then?

Cool well I might bring it along on the 19th then smile.gif

Just checked my radio gear and it's all working, really excited to get driving again now! There are far too many functions on my EX-1 for me to be able to remember what they all do though!

Thank you very much, I haven't seen Dale in years but I'm good friends with his son Dane.

Cool that would be great, I'll let you know if I ever decide to come along!
